The Wool: Nature’s Finest
It begins high in the mountains, with indigenous sheep breeds that produce a wool rich in lanolin. This natural oil makes Afghan rugs water-resistant and gives the fibers a signature soft sheen.
We source only virgin wool, hand-spun by artisans to preserve its tensile strength. This process creates slight variations in the thickness of the yarn—a hallmark of authenticity that machine-spun yarn simply cannot replicate.
The Weave: Thousands of Hands, Thousands of Knots
Each rug is hand-knotted on a vertical loom, a painstaking process that can take months to complete depending on the size and knot density. Using the traditional Senneh or Ghordes knot, weavers tie each knot around the warp threads, cutting the pile by hand after every row.
The pattern is not drawn on a grid; it lives in the memory of the weaver, passed down through matrilineal lines. This results in subtle, organic asymmetries that make every rug a one-of-a-kind original.
The Finish: Washed in Light, Cut by Hand
Once the weaving is complete, the rug is cut from the loom and washed in mountain streams or laid under the sun to cure. This natural washing process softens the wool and releases the full vibrancy of the dyes.
Finally, master finishers hand-trim the surface to create a perfectly even pile and hand-tie the fringes—ensuring the ends are as durable as the body of the rug. It is then inspected knot-by-knot to ensure it is ready for your home.
